We are currently seeking motivated individuals to support ongoing efforts to produce a new version of HydroSHEDS. HydroSHEDS represents a foundational hydrographic data framework that consists of a series of global-scale digital products including river networks and catchment delineations. Over nearly two decades, it has enabled many advances in freshwater basin management and provided an invaluable service for conservationists, managers, researchers, planners, economists, and policy makers. We consider it an urgent objective to upgrade the existing HydroSHEDS database and its associated data layers, including conditioned Digital Elevation Models (DEMs).
Background
Conditioned DEMs are critical for hydrological and environmental modeling. Since automated workflows may leave behind issues such as sinks, spikes, or misapplied stream enforcement, manual intervention is often required to ensure accuracy.
Objectives
The contractor will use ESRI ArcGIS Pro and our tailor-made tools to inspect, identify and correct artifacts in conditioned DEMs. This includes detecting and correcting sinks, performing raster corrections, and documenting changes systematically.
Tasks
- Use custom tools identify sinks and depressions in DEMs
- Inspect conditioned DEMs in ArcGIS Pro, and identify anomalies.
- Apply correction and cross-check corrections against reference layers such as imagery, hydrography, and contours.
Qualifications
- Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro for raster/vector editing and hydrological analysis.
- Experience identifying and correcting sinks in DEM datasets.
- Familiarity with hydrological conditioning workflows (sink filling, stream burning, breaching).
- Ability to follow structured documentation processes.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to handle large datasets.
Contract Terms
- Remote from within Canada; independent contractor.
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person having refugee status in Canada. Work permit for at least one year is also acceptable.
- Work is performed on a secure remote machine accessed via VPN, with ArcGIS Pro, data, and tools pre-installed.
- Task-based, with duration and scope defined per dataset.
- Compensation: agreed hourly rate, depending on experience
